Showcase Artist Louis Hurlbut

Filter

LOUIS HURLBUT loves to go down a remote back road, looking for a big stretch of
      uninhabited territory to explore.

"I take a camera, sketchbook and pencil, water bottle and a can of smoked herring and set out cross-country to see what I can see. Clyde Aspervig, the preeminent landscape painter, calls this land snorkeling, Louis writes.

The artist paints en plein air, using oils and casein, and makes color woodblock prints using the centuries-old Japanese mokuhanga method.

During the warm months, he travels and sketches the American West’s mountains, coastlines and prairies. He paints outdoors in the early morning or evening, and flyfishes the rest of the time. When the cold, wet months come, Louis is back in the studio, stove lit, music going, turning those oil sketches into larger paintings or woodblock prints.
