DESCRIPTION
Explore the timeless art of woodcut printmaking in this one-day workshop led by artist Charles Spitzack. This workshop will guide you through the entire process of creating woodcut prints, from the initial stages of designing an image to the final steps of inking and producing your own unique prints. You'll learn how to translate your designs onto wood blocks, safely use the woodcutting tools, and tricks to successfully print by hand.
Charles will guide you in the process of creating prints by hand using high-quality Japanese printmaking paper and Cranfield Safe Wash Relief Ink. This ink allows for easy clean-up and eliminates the need for ventilation in your home studio or chemicals often used in oil based printmaking. You will use brayers to apply the ink evenly across the surface of your carved block, to better achieve consistent and beautiful prints.
One of the unique aspects of woodblock prints is the ability to create multiple colored plates to build a final, layered image. This technique allows for an intuitive and dynamic approach to printmaking, where colors and shapes are built up gradually, leading to surprising and often beautiful results. By the end of the course, you will have developed an introductory understanding of woodcut printmaking, enabling you to continue creating prints from the comfort of your own home—without the need for a press.
