DESCRIPTION
Jumpstart your ability to create high impact visual stories of the places you explore and the people you meet! Photographers of all levels with any camera (including a phone) are welcome for this immersive day of exploration and creativity. We’ll start with an inspiring and interactive morning presentation in Northwind Art's classroom. Using examples from their assignments and adventures around the world, professional travel photographers John and Lisa Merrill will share tips for compelling portrait, landscape, food, architectural and street photography, and explore ways to infuse imagery with a strong sense of place. You'll get practical advice for working in chaotic markets and festivals, capturing fast-moving subjects, and photographing at night.

In addition, you’ll learn how intentional camera movement (ICM) during long exposures can expand your visual toolbox and result in intriguing impressionistic images. At the end of the morning, John and Lisa will dive into approaches for combining favorite photos into captivating stories of your travel adventures to treasure and share.

After a mid-afternoon break you’ll have the opportunity to apply what you learned and nurture your creativity in Port Townsend and Fort Worden. On-location photo coaching can be transformative. With the Merrill’s demos and on-the-spot guidance and encouragement, you’ll harness the transformative power of light and compose for impact, and discover new ways of seeing and photographing. Possible subjects include seascapes, nautical flavor, architectural close-ups, nature’s intricate patterns, and engaging portraits of people at play or work. 

A week following the class, our group will reconvene over Zoom to share images, give and get supportive feedback, and be inspired by what others created. 

SUPPLY INFORMATION
Students can bring their own camera of choice (including a camera on a smartphone).

CANCELLATION POLICY
If Northwind Art has to cancel a course for any reason, all enrolled students will receive a 100% refund (including any materials fee).

Students who withdraw from a course at least seven days prior to its first meeting will receive a 90% refund (less any materials fee).

Students withdrawing fewer than seven days from the first day of class are not eligible for a refund except in the case of illness or injury, in which case they are eligible to receive a 40% refund (less any materials fee).

Please note that 10% of every course’s registration fee is considered to be a non-refundable deposit in cases of withdrawal to cover administrative overhead.
