DESCRIPTION
Join the international art movement of urban sketching that proves art is a universal human language. Urban sketching is an umbrella term for illustrating what you see on site. It can be pencil, pen, or watercolor or all three combined; even ink wash, some white gouache, markers, and colored pencils, anything lightweight, portable and fast drying. Perfection is not the goal and styles vary from whimsical and loose to accurate architectural renderings. Beginners have success as easily as experienced sketchers, and all the materials can be low cost.

Urban sketchers work in sketchbooks, often in their laps, usually spending less than an hour on each scene. Their subject is architecture, people, vehicles and the surrounding nature mixed in, sometimes parks and statues, sometimes indoors, sometimes cars and people. Sketchers carry their very portable supplies with them at almost all times not only because sketching is better than scrolling on your phone when you have free time, but also to document their travels whether close or far from home filling dozens of sketchbooks over time. Port Townsend is a perfect location for this workshop, with Fort Worden, fascinating homes, boats, and a main street full of people, pets and vehicles.

We will be spending most of our time outdoors capturing a variety of scenes, but will also gather at the end of each day to see what we have all accomplished. Participants will receive a detailed map of where the ideal locations to sketch from are, so you do not have to already know the town. Teaching artist Anne Pfeiffer will demo the first hour of the first day, but to save us precious sketching time, all participants will receive a PDF reviewing of styles and approaches, as well as explaining how to choose materials and some warm ups to do ahead of time. Participants should have some drawing experience.
