DESCRIPTION
For millennia, leaves, roots, flowers, and colored earths have provided humans with dyes and pigments to enrich our lives. In this workshop we will source pigments from raw materials to make ink for dip pens, paints, crayons, and printing inks. Indigo blue, yellow ochre from the Oregon Coast, madder and carmine lakes, Sitka spruce and oak galls tannins... A full spectrum of beautiful natural hues will blossom onto our palette.

After crafting our materials, we will play with them to create decorative papers and small works. This exploratory workshop is geared towards naturalists, artists, bookbinders, and natural dyers looking to expand their practice by partnering with nature.

SUPPLY INFORMATION
Most required materials and supplies will be provided, however students should bring the following:

• Apron.
• Dust mask.
• Surgical style gloves.
• Note taking supplies.
• 1-2 small towels/rags.
• Sketch pad or several small pieces of various favorite papers (multimedia,
  watercolor, or print making - very flexible, choose type geared towards personal preferences).
• Optional: Printing blocks, stencils, self-healing mat & x-acto knife, preferred brushes or dip pens.

ABOUT IRIS
Iris Sullivan Daire is an artist and naturalist dyer who uses site specific pigments and dyes to add new layers of meaning to the narrative of her work. She lives with her family next to the Columbia River in Astoria, Oregon. Growing traditional dye plants, and quietly mapping the hidden colors contained within the native and invasive plants of the North Oregon Coast.

Iris holds a BFA in fiber arts from University of Oregon, and has been teaching for over 20 years. She relishes using science, metaphor and story to bring the materials to life while teaching. She is the co-founder of IndigoFest, an annual gathering celebrating home grown blues which takes place in Seaview, WA every August.

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY

If Northwind Art has to cancel a course for any reason, all enrolled students will be notified and receive a 100% refund (including any materials fee).

Students withdrawing from a course at least seven days prior to the first day of class will receive a 90% refund (less any materials fee). 

Students withdrawing fewer than seven days from the first day of class are not eligible for a refund—except for illness or injury, in which case students are eligible to receive a 40% refund (less any materials fee).

Please note that in cases of withdrawal, 10% of every course’s registration fee is considered a non-refundable deposit to cover administrative overhead. All refunds will be applied to the same credit card that was used for enrollment. No credits or transfers will be granted.
