DESCRIPTION
Thanks to knowledge of the color wheel and a lot of practice making mixing charts, experienced artists can easily mix any color they see or imagine without much effort. This is a fun, no-pressure workshop, perfect for those who attended the June 8 Color Mixing and the Color Wheel workshop, or those who just need a little help overcoming some frustrations when mixing colors, or just artists who need a reason for getting out of your studio while fine tuning their skills around some new friends. Teaching artist Anne Pfeiffer will show you the secrets beyond the color wheel. We will practice color mixing charts and then try to apply what we practiced with a fun color mixing swatch game "in the wild."

SUPPLY INFORMATION

  • Watercolor, gouache, oil, or acrylic paint. Friends can share tubes of paint to save money!
Do not bring mineral spirits or turpentine with oils because we will be indoors, use only a non-toxic medium and we have soap to clean up. Water miscible oils are fine to use. Bring what you already have. Recommended gouache brands are Winsor Newton Designer series, M. Graham, or Turner. Any brand of watercolor is fine. For acrylics, choose a more pigment rich line like Amsterdam, Golden or Liquitex.
  • Bring a warm and cool of the three primaries plus white.
Different mediums often have different names for the same pigments. Warm yellows lean towards orange, Cadmium Yellow or Cadmium-free yellow or Cadmium Yellow Hue. Cool yellows lean towards green, such as Lemon or Azo. Warm reds are tomato red like Cadmium Red or Pyrol Red.  Cool reds lean towards magenta like Permanent Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridrone Magenta or Quinacridrone Rose. A warm blue is Ultramarine. A cool blue leaning towards green is Pthalo blue, green shade (not Pthalo green). You do not need any tube secondaries or neutrals, but bring them if you have them.
  • Appropriate brushes for your medium.
  • Your favorite mixing tray or palette, although we have some you can use.
  • Watercolor paper for watercolor, gouache, or acrylic. A few canvas panels for oil or thicker acrylic.
  • A sketchbook/notebook for making some notes.
  • Optional: a table top easel.
