DESCRIPTION
Cyanotype is an alternative non-toxic photographic process with a rich historical background. Join the wildly talented artist Fruma Markowitz, coming all the way from the East Coast, in creating images in a magical method akin to alchemy.

In this workshop you will learn about how the non-toxic cyanotype chemicals (potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate) react during exposure to sun/UV light to produce permanent, ethereal, blue and white images. Using botanical specimens and common household materials, you will produce one-of-a-kind compositions involving both random and intentional mark-making.

Fruma will guide you through exploration of how these chemical reactions can be used to play and interact with texture and color. The results are often surprising and you will go home with the knowledge of how to create these pieces of art yourself as well as with several of your own prints.

ABOUT FRUMA
Fruma Markowitz was formally trained in photography and fine arts at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel, where she graduated with a BFA in Photography in 1984. For the next five years she worked as a photojournalist, book jacket designer, portraitist and fashion photographer, as well as teaching and showing her personal work in Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem. Since moving to Connecticut in 2003 Fruma’s photography practice has functioned as her personal visual diary. She makes images daily and shows her work at both local and national fine art venues. During the COVID-19 pandemic her practice pivoted towards engagement with historic and alternative photographic processes, with a focus on cyanotype, multi-media collage and lumen printing. Concern with womanhood, cultural history, memory and shared legacies are where she mostly draws inspiration for making images.
