DESCRIPTION
In this camp we will engage in exploration of what exactly constitutes a portrait. Though it may seem straightforward, there is not always agreement in the art world! Some artists have stretched the concept of a portrait in ways that push back on the traditional way of capturing someone's likeness: from a pile of candy (Felix Gonzalez-Torres) all the way to a scribbled-on, saliva-coated film negative (Justine Varga).

Campers will participate in creating a non-figurative portrait, a portrait of a memory, papier-mâché sculpture portrait, and a self portrait. There is no need to consider yourself an artist to join in this camp. The children in this camp will leave with a personally-explored definition of what can be called a portrait, with a deeper understanding of how to communicate ideas, and ultimately something about another person using visual metaphor.
