DESCRIPTION
The Old Masters Dutch Baroque painters like Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Rubens used oil paint, but to our delight, their multi-layered techniques are actually even more efficient in acrylic because acrylic dries much faster than oil. You can create dozens of layers in acrylic in a few hours, which is much faster than in oil. Through a mixture of demos and hands-on painting sessions, you will learn Wayne Jiang’s unique acrylic glazing and layering techniques to paint like the old Dutch masters.
In this workshop you will learn:
• To paint acrylic in layers (the technique of the old Dutch masters)
• How to create rich tones with a limited color palette
• The color theory behind Old Masters' paintings from the Baroque era
• Layering and glazing in acrylic
• To combine opaque and transparent painting
• To create subtle color tones with layering
• To create translucent colors with glazing
The workshop will start with an optional museum trip on May 30 to the Seattle Art Museum. Wayne will discuss the Old Dutch Masters’ layering technique in front of the Old Masters’ paintings. In the following two days you will apply the techniques. If you’re interested in the museum tour, please email Wayne for more info. You will pay for your own admission to the museum.
Participants will be provided with step-by-step instructions and many practical tips. All materials are included with the price of the workshop (paint, brushes, painting surfaces, and photo reference). Students can bring a photo reference to use for the second painting on the second day of the workshop.
