DESCRIPTION
Who gets remembered—and who gets left out—when we tell the story of art? This six-part series lifts the curtain on a broader, deeper art history by centering women-identified artists whose lives and works challenge the dominant narrative. Each 2-hour session is purchased separately and focuses on one artist, inviting you to learn about their technique, historical context, personal journey, and lasting impact—and then create your own artwork in response.

Did you know that the first watercolor paintings were created by a woman, sixty years before the establishment of the exclusive, male-only Watercolor Society? Or that Catharina van Hemessen painted the very first known self-portrait at an easel? We will explore the cosmic mandalas of Hildegard von Bingen, a medieval German mystic and visionary artist; the vibrant, politically charged story quilts of Faith Ringgold, shaped in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement; the hallucinatory polka-dotted worlds of Yayoi Kusama, who channels her experience living with mental illness into powerful, immersive work; and of course, Frida Kahlo—whose fiercely personal imagery often gets flattened into pop culture iconography. We will also meet Christine de Pizan, a groundbreaking French manuscript illustrator and writer who used her art to carve out space and power in a patriarchal world.

Each session includes guided discussion, contextual background, and a related creative project—ranging from illuminated manifestos to stitched visual storytelling. Workshops may be taken individually or as a discounted six-part series. No previous experience in art history or art-making is required—just bring your curiosity and willingness to reimagine the canon.
