DESCRIPTION
Faith Ringgold, an artist and activist born in 1930, grew up in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance. Through her famous quilts, sculptures, and performances she celebrated Black joy and Black everyday life, creating her own "super realism" style during the early 1960s. Ringgold is famous for her vivid children's book Tar Beach (1991), popularized by LeVar Burton's Reading Rainbow. But her work was making waves in the Civil Rights Movement long before then.
In this class, we will make simple "story quilts" inspired by Ringgold's quilted masterpieces. We'll dive into how she discovered her own legacy of creative women, finding ways to raise their voices and express joy, solidarity, and power in troubled times. Faith Ringgold challenged power in new ways and indelibly influenced what "political" art could be. No previous experience in art history or art-making is required, just bring your curiosity and willingness to re-imagine the canon.
