KATE DWYER of Port Townsend writes: “I found my way to art down the garden path. Instead of art school, my education came by way of working in, and then designing, gardens. I also traveled widely — through books and in the world — focusing on design, be it buildings, textiles, ceramics or paintings.”
One day Kate happened into a fabric store and was entranced by the materials, though she didn’t sew. She bought a few pieces of fabric, and adapted papier-maché — a craft with torn paper and glue — to fabric and thread, creating her fabric maché bowls.

“My artistic influences include, of course, nature,” Kate writes, along with “the usual cast of characters of modern Western art, Japanese arts, and graphic design.”
