DESCRIPTION
This workshop brings together the charm of mark making, the drama of color contrast, the power of design planning and, importantly, adding secure findings for functionality and durability.

Students bring their own aesthetic to the workshop to create pieces unique to them using tips, techniques and guiding principles gleaned from the class. Beginners can work at their own comfort level, and more experienced polymer clay artists can boost their design skills or try out new techniques to apply to future projects. Students will be given options to simplify the projects to suit their skill level.

Essentials such as conditioning clay, color mixing, baking and finishing will be reinforced throughout.

SUPPLY INFORMATION
The $10 materials fee will cover supplies for the group such as baby wipes, liquid polymer clay, parchment to tent work, cardstock, pin backs, earring posts and more. There will also be a large sampling of small tools to explore during the class and a few shared pasta rolling machines.

Students must bring with them:

  • Polymer clay: Premo is a good choice and is made by Sculpey. (Do not confuse Premo with Sculpey III. The packages are nearly identical) Black and white, plus any colors you like. 3–5 two-oz packages should do it. More will be available for purchase. Clay Colors: The mixing colors of fuschia , cobalt blue , cadmium yellow , cadmium red will get you any color you want.
  • Acrylic roller
  • Tissue blade (rigid and flexible)
  • Polymer clay roller or pasta machine (optional but highly recommended): This is indispensable for both conditioning clay and rolling out even slabs. You can often find one in thrift stores or online used. I like the Atlas 6” roller version. Makins has a decent enough starter machine.
  • Work surface: Ceramic tile or marble. 12 x 12 matte white tile works great.
  • Sand paper in various grits (sanding blocks work great): 220, 320, 400, 600, 1000 (I don’t go beyond 400 but if you want shinier finishes, you might)
  • X-acto knife

Other useful supplies:

  • Sketchbook and pencil
  • Small flat paint brush (for liquid polymer clay)
  • Small paint mixing tray (or a plastic lid)
  • Ruler
  • Container to keep your tools organized
  • Forming and texturing tools like picks (awls), ball styluses, toothpicks, coarse sandpaper, texturing sponges, rubber-tipped shapers
  • Acrylic paint (optional)
  • Hand drill (Pin Vise) (optional)

ABOUT JANE
Jane Pellicciotto is a second-career jewelry designer and maker after spending decades as a graphic designer. She chose jewelry as a medium for its small scale and intimate nature. She enjoys the functional aspect of jewelry and the idea that it transfers onto a physical body of another, taking on a whole new story. Her work is abstract, often colorful and has a rustic elegance. She’s inspired by the urban environment with its gritty textures, repeating patterns and forms worn by time, use and the elements. She looks for the extraordinary in the ordinary. Jane also has a robust art-making practice, combining gel plate printing and collage.

She sells her work online, in galleries and at national juried art and craft shows like the Smithsonian Craft Show and the Philadelphia Museum of Art Contemporary Craft Show. She continues to help clients establish their brands and tell their stories to the people who matter most.
