DESCRIPTION
Here's a wonderful opportunity to learn the basic tools and fundamental brush strokes of Japanese calligraphy. In this class, you will get to practice writing the character 「馬」 (uma, horse) —the zodiac animal of 2026— while exploring the meaning and movement behind each stroke.
Through dynamic brushwork, students will express the kanji 「馬」, capturing the energy and motion of a running horse. No prior experience is needed; expert teaching artist Chiyo Sanada is your guide.

ABOUT CHIYO
Chiyo Sanada’s lifelong passion is the art of Japanese calligraphy (Shodo). Originally from Hiroshima, Japan, she began training in calligraphy at the age of seven and has dedicated her life to mastering and sharing this traditional art form. For the past 25 years, Chiyo has made her home in the Pacific Northwest, where she continues to inspire others through teaching and cultural exchange.
Through her work, Chiyo aims to create meaningful connections with people around the world, using the expressive beauty of calligraphy as a bridge between cultures. Sharing the spirit and traditions of Japan brings her great joy.

CANCELLATION POLICY
If Northwind Art has to cancel a course for any reason, all enrolled students will be notified and receive a 100% refund of the course enrollment fee.
Students withdrawing from a course at least seven days prior to the first day of class will receive a 90% refund of the course enrollment fee.
Students withdrawing fewer than seven days from the first day of class are not eligible for a refund—except for illness or injury, in which case students are eligible to receive a 40% refund of the course enrollment fee.
Please note that 10% of every course’s registration fee is considered a non-refundable deposit to cover administrative overhead. Any donation given at the time of checkout is also non-refundable. All refunds will be applied to the same credit card that was used for enrollment. No credits or transfers will be granted.
