DESCRIPTION
In this lively, interactive one-day workshop, teaching artist Beth Herrild will help you take your work in acrylics to the next level. We will dive deeper into materials, surfaces, brushes, and other tools, as well as values, composition and color theory.

Beth will share pro tips she has learned along the way, and we’ll look at images together to see some common pitfalls that can limit a piece's success. We'll also discover what makes paintings really sing! Along with this exploration of acrylics, Beth will share some of her techniques for collaging in colorful papers, glazing, and ways to create texture.

SUPPLY INFORMATION

Students should bring:

  • Acrylic paints in the three primary colors (red, yellow, and blue), white, black, and any other colors you enjoy (no craft paints);
  • Gesso (Liquitex, Golden, Blick, etc.) and an Isolation Coat (Golden makes one, there may be others);
  • For brushes, Beth works primarily with flats. If you like other shapes, that's ok too. She recommends having a couple of flats, around 1/2" wide and around 1" wide, and any larger or smaller ones you like. If they're not exactly those sizes it’s okay.  Princeton and Royal & Langnickel are reliable brands. Beth also loves Rosemary Evergreen Long Handled Brushes (flats) https://www.rosemaryandco.com/;
  • Beth loves working on cradled wood panels, but if you enjoy working on canvas or canvas board, that’s fine too. She likes pre-primed panels and if you use those, you don't need Gesso;
  • Gloves are optional;
  • Paper towels and baby wipes can be really helpful.

ABOUT BETH
Beth Herrild is a mixed media acrylic painter on Whidbey Island. Her work is an exploration into our perception of the physical world, its importance in our lives, and how our understanding is shaped by our environment and our own perceptions and attitudes. She combines vibrant color, value, and texture, to create pieces that balance the representational and abstract. She has an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts and a Master's in Whole Systems Design. Many years ago she was fortunate enough to see the profound impact art can have in people's lives. She taught art to children, as an art docent, in public schools for over 12 years, taught at a juvenile detention center, worked with youth & young adults experiencing homelessness, and currently teaches art to inmates at the Island County jail. She shows her work at Columbia City Gallery in south Seattle and Cultus Bay Glass on Whidbey Island.
