DESCRIPTION
This workshop is designed for visual artists who are inspired by performance, movement, and the body. Participants will actively draw, move, experiment, and reflect on how their hands, fingers, and whole bodies convey and symbolize expressive thought. Through quick gesture drawings, slower observational studies, movement-based prompts, and collaborative exercises, participants will explore gesture as a way of thinking through the body and with the body. We will also find the power in the expression of touch.
This one-day workshop connects contemporary practice to ancient and early modern artistic traditions rooted in touch. We will highlight how physical movement becomes a visual language for metaphor, emotion, social status, power, persuasion, and moral character. Through this workshop, participants can develop more substantial confidence in their physical embodiment of gesture and a deeper connection between body and image. We will also learn practical tools for expressing energy, emotion, and presence in our visual work.
