DESCRIPTION
Take your iPhone photography to new heights with pro photographers John and Lisa Merrill!
This class begins with an inspiring and interactive morning session in Northwind Art’s classroom from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Using examples from their assignments and adventures around the world, John and Lisa Merrill will introduce you to the keys to compelling images: light, design, and moment. You will learn how to make the most of your iPhone’s powerful features—such as portrait mode for creative blur, burst mode for action, and panorama mode for sweeping landscapes and seascapes—along with apps that extend its capabilities and boost your creativity. There will be breaks throughout the session to immediately experiment with each feature.
Over lunch (bring your own), the Merrills will offer practical tips for organizing your photos, optimizing your favorites, and combining them into visual stories to treasure and share.
After a mid-day break, the class continues at 4:00 PM with an on-location photography session around Port Townsend and Fort Worden. This is your chance to apply what you have learned and get on-location photo coaching. Potential subjects include downtown architecture, maritime life, seascapes and landscapes, street photography, and portraits of people at work or play. With the Merrills’ demos, real-time guidance, and encouragement, you will learn to harness the power of light, compose for visual impact, and make photographs with intention.
John and Lisa will encourage playful experimentation, including creating intriguing abstract images that spark curiosity and wonder. For those interested, they will offer guidance in expressionist photography using iPhone apps to include textures, creative blur, or layered exposures. The day ends with a golden-hour photo session on the beach at sunset.
To complete the experience, the group will be invited to reconvene via Zoom on Wednesday September 10, from 6:30–8:00 PM for an optional relaxed and supportive image-sharing session. This is a chance to reflect on your work, be inspired by what others created in the same locations, and exchange feedback. A recording will be available for anyone unable to attend live.
Join the Merrills to discover new ways of seeing and photographing, expand your visual toolbox, and nourish your creativity.
While this class is designed for iPhone users, much of the contect will be applicable to users of any phone camera.
