Women in Art History
Who gets remembered—and who gets left out—when we tell the story of art? Join us as we lift the curtain on a broader, deeper art history by centering women-identified artists. Their lives and works challenge the dominant narrative!
In these sessions, we will explore the cosmic mandalas of Hildegard von Bingen, a medieval German mystic and visionary artist. Then we'll delve into the vibrant, politically charged story quilts of Faith Ringgold, shaped in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement; the hallucinatory polka-dotted worlds of Yayoi Kusama, who channels her experience living with mental illness into powerful, immersive work; and of course, Frida Kahlo, whose fiercely personal imagery often gets flattened into pop culture iconography.
Each class includes guided discussion, rich background information, and a related creative project—ranging from illuminated manifestos to stitched visual storytelling. No previous experience in art history or art-making is required—just bring your curiosity and willingness to reimagine the canon. All supplies are provided!
