DESCRIPTION
The idea that the image is "truth" is being eroded with each passing day. How does this erosion feed into our understanding of memory and the relationships these images spark in us? Through discussion of the ongoing project Identifying Factors, photographer Tara Champion will discuss how these ideas have played a role in the uncovering of preverbal trauma and a search for one’s self through the past.
Tara will seek to help students mine their own archives and/or source materials from elsewhere to build and connect a narrative that speaks not only to the remembering of a moment, but to the identity and truths that can be pulled forward through imagery. The multidisciplinary practice that Tara has been working with means that there will be a broad discussion of how to work and think about "the object" and what manipulating it can do to our viewing and understanding of its content.
The York and Goodman Photography Series was born from a hope to give photographers opportunities to stretch and reimagine how they use photography to capture the world around them. Each course in the series will include an hour-long lecture and Q&A session, a week-long assignment in which students will submit their photos online to get feedback from a group of volunteer professional photographers, and an hour-long follow-up class meeting date to share work and receive feedback from both the teacher and fellow students.
