DESCRIPTION
Get ready to play with sun, shadows, and shades of deep, dreamy blue in this joy-filled workshop. Under the guidance of artist Fruma Markowitz, you’ll explore the magical world of cyanotype, a 19th-century photographic printing process that transforms light and everyday objects into striking blue-and-white prints on paper and fabric. No experience is needed — just curiosity and a love for getting your hands in the mix! All essential materials are provided.

In this workshop you will learn how non-toxic cyanotype chemicals react during exposure to sunlight or UV light to produce permanent, luminous images. You will experiment with botanicals, found objects, and even pantry ingredients to add unexpected color and texture. Then, scissors in hand, you'll cut, layer, reimagine, and stitch your printed pieces into playful, personal collage compositions — anything from a fabric book to a wall piece to something wonderfully abstract. This workshop invites you to follow your creative hunches and discover how intention and spontaneity can come together on the page — or cloth. You will walk away with both a deeper understanding of alternative photography processes and a one-of-a-kind artwork infused with your own creativity and curiosity.

ABOUT FRUMA
Fruma Markowitz was formally trained in photography and fine arts at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel, where she graduated with a BFA in Photography in 1984. For the next five years she worked as a photojournalist, book jacket designer, portraitist, and fashion photographer, as well as teaching and showing her personal work in Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem. Since moving to CT in 2003, Fruma’s photography practice has functioned as her personal visual diary. She makes images daily and shows her work at both local and national fine art venues. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her practice pivoted towards engagement with historic and alternative photographic processes, with a focus on cyanotype, multi-media collage, and lumen printing. Concern with womanhood, cultural history, memory, and shared legacies are where she mostly draws inspiration for making images.
