Learn to mix your own colors with Procion dye without using recipes. Ann will introduce the full spectrum of single-chemical colors as she demonstrates low-water immersion dyeing. Participants will practice various exercises designed to develop their knowledge of each color and its characteristic way of fixing and flowing in the fabric. You will learn which colors to use when working thick and thin, which colors for blending, which ones for creating haloes, etc.
You will use various cottons to learn how their weight and weave affects how the colors work. We will focus completely on color using simple applications that use gloved hands, brushes, rollers and scrapers. The ultimate goal of the class is to finally dump the idea that mixing colors is difficult.
Four yards of soda-soaked fabric will be provided as part of the registration fee.
- All dyes and auxiliaries are provided as part of the registration fee.
- Additional information on supplies will be provided upon registration.

First, Ann Johnston learned to sew, then she learned to dye fabric. In between, she earned a BA in Literature from Stanford University, and an MA Geography at the University of Oregon. She taught for the Peace Corps in Lima, Peru, raised two sons in Oregon with her husband Jim, and started quilting. Ann’s years of experimentation with dye and fabric have led to piles of quilts, worldwide travel, and numerous exhibitions and publications. Her collectors respect her viewpoint and her students admire her generosity and skill in teaching what she knows.
