In this camp we will engage in exploration of what exactly constitutes a portrait. Though it may seem straightforward, there is not always agreement in the art world! Some artists have stretched the concept of a portrait in ways that push back on the traditional way of capturing someone's likeness: from a pile of candy (Felix Gonzalez-Torres) all the way to a scribbled-on, saliva-coated film negative (Justine Varga).

Campers will participate in creating a non-figurative portrait, a portrait of a memory, papier-mâché sculpture portrait, and a self portrait. There is no need to consider yourself an artist to join in this camp. The children in this camp will leave with a personally-explored definition of what can be called a portrait, with a deeper understanding of how to communicate ideas, and ultimately something about another person using visual metaphor.

All required art supplies are provided with support from our generous donors.

After registration, course details are available via the Northwind Art School learning portal, including all forms and documents outlining our youth program policies.

Kate Lovejoy has has been working in education for the past 18 years and most recently as a middle school art teacher. They love nothing more than building creative spaces that feel safe, inspiring, and full of joy! Kate is currently working as the education director for Northwind Art School and is excited to step back into the classroom to help families make playful art together. Kate's favorite thing to do is make kind mischief and they love the idea of aliens but will never willingly travel into outer space.

Tsivra Bird is an artist and writer living in Port Townsend. Before moving to Washington in 2021 they worked for over a decade volunteering with a variety of NGOs, non-profits, and private residences around the world; this included building children's after-school programs and life-sharing with adults with developmental disabilities. In their spare time they can be found looking for magic in everyday moments. They love pickled things, hyenas, mysticism, and kindness.
