DESCRIPTION
Laura Hart Newlon's lens-based, interdisciplinary practice evolves out of a fascination with materiality, tactility, and acts of looking and touching as personal, political practices. Photography and video form the roots of her work, though she is invested in material exploration and draws often upon her background in cultural anthropology, exploratory writing practice, and different sculptural and installation-based strategies. A single idea in Laura's studio is often iterative, evolving through different analog and digital media, and finding new possibilities through each unfolding.

On day one of this two-day workshop, Laura will present about her approach to photography, along with specific ideas and skill sets within photography, and then task participants with specific photographic assignments. Over the next week participants will complete the assignment and submit their photos online to get feedback from a group of volunteer professional photographers. At the second class meeting date, everyone will be back in person for feedback with Laura to look at a small show of each student's best piece from that week's assignment.

The York and Goodman Photography Series was born from a hope to give photographers opportunities to stretch and reimagine how they use photography to capture the world around them. Each course in the series will include an hour-long lecture and Q&A session, a week-long assignment in which students will submit their photos online to get feedback from a group of volunteer professional photographers, and an hour-long follow-up class meeting date to share work and receive feedback from both the teacher and fellow students.
