Unlike standard figure drawing instruction, which is based on methodical, step-by-step construction of a two-dimensional image, gesture figure drawing is a system of rapid analysis and rendering that is more free and intuitive, enabling the practiced artist to capture the essence of a pose or movement in as little as one minute. This makes it possible to sketch not only posed models but also poses of people in daily life who may not even know they are being drawn.

Whether or not you are experienced in conventional drawing techniques, this fun and fast-moving class led by teaching artist Jim Bradrick can help you to develop your ability to analyze a pose and then to record a sort of shorthand of it onto paper.

This Level 1 course will include plenty of in-class drawing from a live model since practice, as with any discipline, is so very important.

And will also include focus on these areas:

Perspective: Jim has found that some knowledge of perspective is important in grounding your drawings believably, so we will be taking a look at that.

Draw 2 Instead of 1: Often you may find that a subject you want to draw will be paired up with a second person in conversation or other activity, in which case it is partly their interaction that you want to portray.

Balance, Weight and Foreshortening: Awareness of these three elements is essential to getting a good result in gesture drawing, or any figure drawing, so we will talk about how to recognize and deal with these things in a model’s pose.

Hope to see you there!

  • Drawing pad of 12 x 16 inches or larger (since we will be doing a dozen or more drawings per session, a cheap paper such as newsprint or sketch is recommended).
