DESCRIPTION
Photography has taken many different forms throughout its inception. The ability to capture an image, be it portrait, landscape, and street scene, are of course obvious examples. And let us not forget the whole variety of medical imaging, and the latest incredible piece of photographic equipment, the James Webb space telescope, ultimately capturing the beginning of time itself. Or any of the other genres and subject matter that a camera, lens, and light-sensitive media have been pointed at in the last 200 years and been memorialized as a photograph.

We’re all familiar with photographic realism. But what happens when a photograph loses its “realistic” interpretation of the real world? How is it viewed? How is it interpreted? How do we relate to it? What is it?

Brian Goodman started his Solace of Space series of work almost 15 years ago with the intention of blurring the line that we are familiar with between photography and the traditional forms of fine art, i.e., painting, drawing, pastel, etc. As Ansel Adams wrote many years ago, “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.” This is what Brian does and the Solace of Space collection is a perfect example of “making” a photograph. Brian takes it one step further by using the camera as his brush and filters, software, papers and ink as his paints and canvas; all of which he uses to create the final image.

Brian will discuss and show samples of his Solace of Space work, his different techniques, how an image started and where it ended up, and what it means to him.

The York and Goodman Photography Series was born from a hope to give photographers opportunities to stretch and reimagine how they use photography to capture the world around them. Each course in the series will include an hour-long lecture and Q&A session, a week-long assignment in which students will submit their photos online to get feedback from a group of volunteer professional photographers, and an hour-long follow-up class meeting date to share work and receive feedback from both the teacher and fellow students. 

Students who participate in at least four of the York & Goodman courses will have the opportunity to exhibit their work at Reveille Cafe on the Fort Worden campus January-March 2024.

ABOUT BRIAN
Brian Goodman studied photographic arts at the Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in Jerusalem and Otis/Parsons School of Art & Design in Los Angeles. He opened a professional photo and design studio in 1987 in Pasadena, California, and became a pioneer in the field of digital commercial photography.

His book and exhibit, Manzanar: Their Footsteps Remain, is a 40-year historical study of a World War II Japanese-American concentration camp in the California desert. Brian’s latest book, People Places Things, is a collection of his black and white photographs from the last 48 years. In his current series, Solace of Space, Brian transforms natural landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes into new interpretations of light, color, and movement. Brian has exhibited in group and solo shows across the country and his work is held in private and corporate collections worldwide. He currently resides with his wife, Shira, and their black lab, Shooshi, in Port Townsend, Washington.

If you cannot attend a course for any reason, we can offer you a refund as follows:

• If you cancel more than 2 weeks before the course start date, you will receive a full refund.
• If you cancel less than 2 weeks before course start date, you will receive a 50% refund.
• If you cancel one week or less before the course start date, there will be no refund.
