Learn naturalistic floral design through the lens of sculpture and then explore still life in your chosen medium! In the first half of this workshop guided by floral designer and farmer, Emmy Gran, you will learn the elements of elegant and expressive floral design. You will explore space, shape, movement, rhythm, scale, texture and color through the juicy and fresh medium of local seasonal flowers. Dig into the structured bounty of autumn flowers. We will use the seed pods and grasses to soften the bold, rigid forms of fall blooms. We will use flowers like dahlias, grasses, asters, fennel, zinnias, marigolds and cosmos. You will walk away with the knowledge of how to prepare flowers for design work, manipulate stems for best vase life, utilize floral mechanics, as well how to photograph your arrangements.
The second half of this workshop will be guided by the dynamite teaching artist Suzanne Lamon. You choose the medium and bring the supplies and Suzanne will guide you through what to look for as you immortalize your floral arrangement in a still life. Suzanne will help you capture the little fists of flowers alongside the joyful sprays that have guided you in the arranging process. You will go home with both your floral arrangement and a still life masterpiece.
- All course materials and supplies (including frog, floral mechanics, snips, and locally grown seasonal flowers from Fabled Flora) are provided as part of the registration fee.
- The school will provide paper for the still life, and students can bring their choice of artistic medium. Artists will have access to art materials at the school as well.
After registration, course details are available via the Northwind Art School learning portal. Learn more
Emmy Gran is an educator, flower farmer, and florist, freshly transplanted from Orcas Island. She sees flowers as a metaphor for the human experience. Wintering, blooming, withering, death, decay, regrowth, blossoming and regeneration. If not in her garden, you will find her poking around the hedgerows or in her school bus home with her husband and Maine Coon.
Suzanne Lamon is a Port Townsend artist, known for her brilliant narrative watercolor work. She was a graduate student at Washington State University in the 1970’s, studying with legendary teacher and artist Gaylen Hansen. She was a founding faculty of Port Townsend School of the Arts, and has exhibited extensively in the Pacific Northwest.
