DESCRIPTION
In this two-session course you will be invited by teaching artist Cole Askevold to take the concept of what it means to wrap or unravel something and use it as a visual metaphor for what it means to wrap or unravel something about yourself. This thought will be explored through a variety of mixed media.
Prior to the first session, students will be given a quote to consider and reflect upon. Our conversations and shared interactions woven together will be revealed in the process of what it means to build a body of work focused on visual poetry/metaphor. Our surroundings, when we pay attention to the details, can inspire new work. Learning how to see, unravel, and unwind will help one to understand what can be revealed and at times partially concealed. What is it that you really want to peel back the layers to? When the thread is pulled, do the knots tighten or does the string break? Can the story be woven into the wire frame and softened by wax paper? Experimentation with multiple materials will be utilized in this course, exploring both the additive and reductive processes, like those found in painting and sculpture.
Students will learn the process of creating a series of small works based upon the ideas that stem from their own associations to wrap/unravel. Cole will provide examples through photography, sculpture, and a brief introduction of artists who consider this theme in their work.
