Do you want to know how to get started in painting? Are you looking for a way to unlock your creativity? This workshop is for you! Explore acrylic painting from start to finish: choosing and priming a canvas, selecting brushes, palettes, mixing colors, adding texture, working at an easel, composition, inspiration, finding your unique style, and varnishing a finished painting.  Learn step-by-step from Julie Read as you experience the exhilarating magic of painting, as well as the inevitable mistakes in this engaging learning process.


  • A materials fee of $25, payable to the instructor on the first day, covers all materials needed for the class.
  • All other supplies are included in this workshop, you just need an apron! If you have paints and tools of your own you prefer, you are welcome to bring them.

Julie Read is a self-taught acrylic painter, learning the basics from Port Townsend artist and teacher Max Grover. Her painting style is narrative realism, often with a humorous and nostalgic bent. She teaches using traditional painting techniques that produce true-to-life images but encourages her students to find their own painterly style with a broad range of assignments and exercises.
