SUPPLY INFORMATION
- 9"x 12" cold press watercolor pad, 140 lb. (Fluid brand is recommended because of its texture).
- Sketchbook for taking notes and making small sketches.
- Artist-grade* tubed gouache in warm and cool primaries plus white (One large tube or two small of white, smaller tubes for the other colors).
- Recommended sets are: Holbein Artist Gouache, set of 12; Schminke Designers Gouache set of 12; Turner Designer (not acryl) Gouache set of 12 (25 ml); Winsor Newton Designer Gouache set of 10. The large M. Graham White is recommended for the extra tube of white.
- If buying tubes separately: Warm reds are pyrrol red, cadmium red medium, cadmium red hue; cool reds are permanent alizarin crimson, quinacridrone rose or magenta; warm yellows are hansa yellow, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium yellow medium hue; cool yellow is lemon yellow; warm blue is manganese blue or pthalo blue (green shade); cool blue is ultramarine. Some brands have different names for the colors so please email the instructor if you have questions.
- Optional colors: burnt umber, yellow ochre or raw sienna, burnt sienna, viridian, chrome green, permanent green light.
*This is one medium where anything less than artist grade is frustrating. Don't waste your money on inexpensive gouache because the lower pigment loads will frustrate you.
- Brushes: Leave your wonderful watercolor sables at home. Gouache does not like brushes that hold a lot of water. Inexpensive nylon (a.k.a."taklon") short-handle brushes are recommended in flat and bright 1/4", 1/2" and one or two small rounds. Look at the bottom edge of the bristles and make sure your brush is thin, not fat like a watercolor brush would be.
- Paper towels or Scott shop towels.
- Optional: in addition to paper towels, a few of the fat green automotive detailing towels save paper towel use.
- A mixing tray or airtight 16-well paint saver storage box with the removeable silicon inner lid (also comes with the collapsible water dish). Very affordable and will save your paint from drying out and make it easy to transport. This should run about $10 online (there are some companies trying to charge much more).
- A misting spray bottle.
- 2B pencil and white eraser.
- Drafting tape or artist tape.
- Optional: Creative Mark scrubbers in a variety of small sizes.
