DESCRIPTION
Interested in a preview of this course before committing? Enroll in the Creative Workspace Preview course on January 13, 2024.

Part art-making class, part creative project accountability group, Creative Workspace is for artists and wannabe artists of all disciplines. We'll form an engaged and supportive community through which to nurture and stretch each other in our art-making endeavors, helping each other to work past our internal blocks to making and move toward creating richer, more complex work. This is not a technique class. While technique is useful, ideas are what light teaching artist Jenna Bean Veatch's fire. This class is meant to build a creative community through which you can examine and enliven your own art-making practice.

You will meet in person once a month for four hours at a time. To keep the momentum going and to stay engaged with your art and with each other, you'll post weekly assignments online. Together in this class you will explore a wide range of ways to spark imagination and be given opportunity to dig into questions like, “What do I want to say with my art?” “What do I want to be putting into the world?” and “How can I use art to respond to what's going on around me or process what I'm experiencing?” This class will explore themes of grief and joy, wading into the unknown, and letting different voices speak.

In the first half of the 12-week session, we'll make as many different things as possible, focusing more on quantity than quality. In the second half, we get to start refining our work. For the second half of the course, each person will choose one project or piece to focus on and develop for our final showing on April 28.

Artists whose work we'll look at for inspiration in the first half of the course include Toni Morrison, Lynda Barry, Ross Gay, Amy Sherald, Jad Abumrad, Yoko Ono, Miranda July, Hannah Gadsby, and Beyoncé. You'll walk away more connected to yourself, your art-making process, and a community of fellow beautiful creative humans. Join radical master of connection and creative wizard, Jenna Bean Veatch, as she guides you into a better understanding of what you are trying to do with your art and how to breathe more life into your work, all while accessing the experiences of being human. This is a class for anyone trying to do more with the art they are making.

ABOUT JENNA
Jenna Bean Veatch is a multi-disciplinary performing artist and teacher who has been accused of creating “pure, unadulterated, heart-stopping whimsy.” She makes dance-theater shows, stop-action animation, music, written pieces, and delightful objects.

Her work is invitational and experiential. Her first show, Sideshow, inspired by old-fashioned circus sideshows, drew her audience into a dream world, populated by characters like The Tree Man, who had branches growing from his palms which bloomed when he fell in love. Her music videos are funny and then sometimes surprisingly sad, simultaneously kitschy and heartbreaking. Her current project is The Not-Creepy Gathering for People Who Are Single and Want to Fall In Love, a participatory event designed to facilitate connection. Her secret agenda at each of these events is to gently take participants by the hand and walk them into a space of vulnerability, because vulnerability makes way for connection – but she does it slyly. Her charm and wit are infectious and disarming, which lends itself well to work that is quirky and moving, playful and powerful.
